This is a simple guide on how to get ready for any kind of photo session. Comment below with your thoughts and any questions so I can answer them or maybe even make a follow up post! Happy Friday!
Once you’ve got your photographer and date lined up, you’ll to want to pick a location. To do this you have to think about the kind of person/family you are.
Are you funky, modern, outdoorsy, indie…? Do you want to shoot at a museum, downtown, in a forest or by a lake? Those are all things to consider. Is there a location with special meaning to you or your family like your favourite lookout or picnic spot? Location is very important, but don’t stress too much and feel free to ask your photographer for suggestions. Picking a location that suits your personality is what’s important, whether you want a business professional or a fun casual look. Which leads me to #2…
Another important question is whether you want your photos to be staged, posed, candid or a combination. It’s a minor thing to think about but it could potentially affect your ideal location. For example staged and posed photos tend to look best in a more modern location, like downtown, in and around museums or anywhere with cool architecture and walls. Keep your photographer in the loop with these thoughts and wants to ensure you get just what you’re looking for.
*With that being said, I want you to remember an important thing, you can look at other sessions for inspiration but keep in mind that you and your loved one(s) are so special and unique, your photos are going to be too. Never compare and expect exactly what you used for inspiration. Enjoy the process because you, as an individual will shine so much more. Simply be yourself!
Plan your outfit in advance. That leaves the stressful rushed guesswork out of the equation on the day of. I have a full post on how to dress for a session here if you’re struggling in that department.
Next is a follow up to #3. Iron and hang your clothes the day/night before. Make sure they’re in perfect picture condition before you even start your day. This one circles back to avoiding stress; you’ll basically just put the clothes on and show up! Your photographer will do the rest.
Last but not least, make sure you eat a snack before, and bring snacks if you have kids or a dog/pet. No one wants to be getting their photograph taken while hangry! Those two things do not mesh well!
Now that you’re all ready for your photo session, go grab a beer or glass of wine and enjoy the rest of your Friday!
I hope this is helpful for you all. This is a guide if you need it, feel free to break all of the rules and just have fun because that is the most important!
